Seeking out financial news and advice is as easy as listening to the radio, turning on the TV or jumping online.
Get your financial news online, via HDTV or from satellite radio
by Chris McGinn
Financial uncertainty sends people who are seeking information that is timely, accurate and helpful online. Whether it's real-time stock quotes, investment advice or help understanding economic news, there are many opportunities to stay on top of the heap with help from broadcast networks, satellite radio stations, Internet sites and mobile services.
Broadcast Television
CNBC and the newer Fox Business Network are the two go-to television stations for up-to-the-minute information about financial markets and developing business stories.
Both stations also have made the leap to HD.
CNBC HD+ adds enhanced contact to its normal programming including more stock quotes and relevant charts and graphs to track with discussions. The service also includes a secondary video window with its own audio channel to follow along with press conferences or congressional testimony.
CNBC features daily programming from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as well as after-the-bell shows such as trading expert Jim Cramer's "Mad Money", entrepreneur Donny Deutsch's "The Big Idea", and personal finance guro Suze Orman.
With an eye toward a broader audience by focusing on personal finance issues as well as market news, Fox Business Network launched in October 2007 as a rival to CNBC. Its HD channel features live feeds, stock tickers and graphics and talent simultaneously.
Among its lineup are Neil Cavuto and personal finance expert Dave Ramsey.
Satellite Radio
Both CNBC and Fox Business News have satellite radio presences. These radio stations carry the same programming as their televised counterparts but can be accessed wherever you have your receiver.
CNBC is on Sirius Channel 129 and XM Channel 127. Fox Business News is on XM Channel 128. Joining them on air is another trusted business news name -- Bloomberg Radio at XM Channel 129 and Sirius 130.
Talk radio has long been a source of expert financial advice with names such as Dave Ramsey, Money Talk with Bob Brinker and NPR’s Marketplace. These personalities can be found on satellite radio as well. Ramsey is on XM Channel 165 weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m. EST and Sirius Channel 161 weekdays from 9 p.m. to midnight EST. Brinker's Money Talk airs on XM Channel 166 from 4 to 7 p.m. EST weekend nights or on demand via his website. NPR's Marketplace airs on XM Channel 133 and can also be heard online via podcast or mp3.
Internet and Mobile Access
More and more people are turning to the web for their news, and financial news is no exception. Beyond broadcast names CNBC and Fox Business Network, print-based financial news sources are taking their information directly to the audience via web-centric videos.
Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes are examples of traditional newspapers and magazines that have robust web presences including informative video broadcasts.
The Financial Times also has podcasts available on timely news. Many sites have investment tracking tools and helpful calculators such as how much you need to save for retirement or how much house can you afford.
You can also get your financial news on the go with mobile updates and broadcasts from Fox Business News and CNBC. MobiTV offers streaming video for 35 channels including Fox Business News and Bloomberg TV via Sprint Nextel, AT&T, and Alltel phones. For more dedicated investors, services such as eSignal's Quotrek provide real-time wireless quotes via PDAs and smartphones.
Whatever your level of financial understanding, you can get the news and information you need -- however you need it -- from reliable sources.
