Question about USB hubs?

I want to get a small USB hub for my laptop. My question is, if I have two devices, say a card reader and a external hard drive, connected to a hub and I am using them both, will they both be able to transfer data back and forth simultaneously? Would there be a delay, or would one lock up? Thanks in advance.

You can transfer data simultaneously but it will only run at usb 1.0 speeds.

All a question of speed. USB 2.0 can transfer 480Mb/S (Mega Bits per Second) If you have 2 devices plugged into the hub they will share that speed limitation between them if they are both trying to send data at the same time.

A powered hub will work the best (one that has it's own power cord in addition to the usb to computer) The devices will not lock up and with today's computer speeds you will not notice any transfer slow downs.
