HBO, DirecTV Have OTT Issues

DirecTV’s plans to extend its service to an a la carte model online in 2015 have hit a speed bump, as their agreement with HBO could affect things.

According to the Wall Street Journal, since HBO is expected to launch their own over-the-top streaming service, DirecTV’s deal has provisions if they reach 450,000 subscribers nationally, or even 300,000 in a specific market.

DirecTV could scale back some of its marketing commitments to HBO if those numbers aren’t met.

Either way, DirecTV’s deal with HBO expires in 2015, so a lot of this won’t make that much of a difference, outside of it being used as a bargaining chip in negotiations.
