Top 10 New Movies on Netflix
Many folks were disappointed to find that some of their favorite movies are no longer available via streaming on Netflix. What many people fail to realize is that Netflix is constantly updating the content that they provide via streaming, DVD and Blu-ray. The following is a list of the 10 best new movies on Netflix that you can stream now. This list includes titles from a wide range of genres. Some of the movies that made our list were released in theaters just a few months ago, and others are tried and true classics from yesteryear.
New Movies on Netflix: Thrillers/Action
Jack Reacher (2013)
If you are looking for a classic thriller or crime drama, Jack Reacher (2012) may be your best bet. The film features actor Tom Cruise as the title character, a former criminal investigator with the military who is on the hunt to help a defense attorney find the true sniper behind a series of shootings.
The film is fairly fast paced, with several action scenes and a compelling story line.
The Last Stand (2013)
He’s back! Former action film staple Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in his latest film. In this film, Schwarzenegger plays Ray Owens, a small town sheriff that left the LAPD in disgrace and now spends his time handing out parking tickets. The tranquil setting of the town is soon interrupted as a drug lord escapes FBI custody and heads toward Owens on his way to the border. After leaving a trail of wounded and dead law enforcement officers in his wake, it’s up to Owens to stop him and bring the drug lord to justice.
The film also features Johnny Knoxville and Forest Whitaker among the cast.
Quirky Indie Drama
Drinking Buddies (2013)
The main story line follows the lives of a man and woman who are coworkers and best friends, both on an off the clock, at a small brewery. When the pair go away together for a weekend, and bring their respective romantic partners along, viewers are treated to some funny and unique insights into the nature of friendships, trust, and drinking.
The Square (2013)
For viewers who prefer features with a more serious note, this movie provides in-depth coverage of the story behind the recent Egyptian revolution, as it unfolded in the streets of Cairo and elsewhere in the country.
The film offers an interesting perspective on how easily peaceful protests can turn violent, as well as provides vignettes of individual courage and heroism among the protesters, as some of the gatherings grew out of control of the original organizers.
Raging Bull (1980)
The award-winning film is a dark, gritty look at the life of boxer Jack LaMotta. Filmed in black and white, the story shows the difficulty that LaMotta had with controlling his anger and rage both inside and outside of the ring, while also showing the closeness of the relationship LaMotta had with his brother, played by Pesci.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), American Psycho (2000)
For those that prefer intense, cerebral crime thrillers that feature serial killers and get the gears in your head turning while your heart is pounding, Netflix has two classics from a little over a decade ago: The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) with Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law, and American Psycho (2000) with Christian Bale and Reese Witherspoon.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
This classic movie starred Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, and it never gets old to me, even though I have seen it dozens of times. This film not only makes me laugh and cry, as many romantic tearjerkers do, but it also makes me envious. I envy Holly Golightly, not only for her carefree attitude, but for her “little black dress,” her understanding landlord, her boyfriend — and especially for her cat!
After all the excitement, tears, shock and horror of some of the earlier films I’ve named, I will end this new movies on Netflix list on a lighter note, with two films that are guaranteed to make everyone laugh.
Classic Slapstick Comedy
High Anxiety (1977), Spaceballs (1987)
Some of the current new movies on Netflix you can stream now include several comedies, including these two classics that feature Mel Brooks. In High Anxiety (1977) Mel Brooks plays Dr. Thorndyke, who is accused of murder at the Psychoneurotic Institute for the Very, Very Nervous. Additional cast members include Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn and Harvey Corman.
“May the Schwartz be with you,” as you watch Spaceballs (1987). This is another popular Mel Brooks’ film that spoofs the Star Wars franchise. In this film, Brooks plays several roles, and the film also features actors Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Joan Rivers among others.
Of course, this is not meant to be an all-inclusive list. There are dozens of other new movies on Netflix that you can stream now, as well as new episodes of several popular television shows and serials, including Lilyhammer, Orange is the New Black, The Walking Dead, House of Cards, Being Human, and many more.
